Leo Pope has been promoted to Operations Manager of the City of Kannapolis’ Transportation Division. As Operations Manager, Leo is now responsible for fleet maintenance, sign maintenance, asphalt repairs, street resurfacing and preventative maintenance of city streets as well as snow and ice removal during winter weather events. The Kannapolis Fire Department welcomes three new firefighters, Jacob Gaworecki, Michael Nance and Ryan Wilson, to its ranks. The new recruits completed eight weeks of fire, rescue and medical training prior to officially joining the department. All City of Kannapolis offices will be closed on Monday, September 7, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Garbage and recycling collection services will run on its normal schedule. The City of Kannapolis is accepting upset bids for property on Oak Avenue. The city-owned property includes 230, 234, 242, 246 and 250 Oak Avenue. The properties currently have two tenants, including Pizza Hut, and is suitable for office and commercial space. Terry Spry has been named Chief of Police of the Kannapolis Police Department. He will lead a department, that is one of the only 6% percent of law enforcement agencies nationwide, who are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The department has 106 officers and staff. The City has designated $196,000 in funding to go to non-profits who meet these criteria. Existing or new programs are eligible for funding.
