CITY STREET/SIDEWALK PROJECTS

Little Texas Road Sidewalk

The City of Kannapolis and North Carolina Department of Transportation held a public meeting regarding the construction of a sidewalk on Little Texas Road on January 26, 2021.

The Little Texas Sidewalk Project includes approximately one and half miles of sidewalk and pedestrian improvements along the east side of Little Texas Road and Ruth Avenue from Dale Earnhardt Boulevard to Lane Street. The project also includes improvements to the intersection of Ruth Avenue and Little Texas Road and roadway improvements along Ruth Avenue.

These improvement are designed to assist people to more easily walk or bike to the surrounding neighborhoods, businesses and school in this area. Construction of the project is expected to begin in 2026.

DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION PROJECT

  The initial phases of the Downtown Revitalization Project are completed. Additional phases include development of remaining properties downtown including Harris Teeter, homes and apartments.

Kannapolis Train Station Improvements Construction of a new passenger rail platform, pedestrian overpass and new parking adjacent to the station. 2022 TBD
East First Street Bridge Replacement of the bridge on East First Street over U.S. 29 2022 2026
Lake Fisher Bridge Replacement of the bridge on Brantley Road. TBD TBD
U.S. 29/601 Conversion of the existing interchange to a diverging diamond.  TBD TBD

PARKS & RECREATION

Irish-Buffalo Creek Greenway Phase One (Construction) This is a 2.7 mile; 10 foot wide paved greenway trail which will connect Orphanage Rd. to Rogers Lake Rd. There is also a connection over to Oakwood Ave. Phase Two planning is underway. Fall 2019 Completed and Opened in 2021
Rocky River Greenway One mile extension of the current greenway. It is a 10ft. wide paved greenway trail which will run along the Rocky River from the Mecklenburg County line to the NC 73 bridge. TBD TBD
Westside Park/Eastside Park New parks on the west  and east side of the City. Design is underway for Eastside Park. 2025 TBD

PLANNING

Cannon Boulevard Corridor Plan The Cannon Boulevard Corridor Plan (CBCP) is a land use and transportation plan which will guide future redevelopment of Cannon Boulevard. The CBCP is intended to provide a long-range vision for the transformation of Cannon Boulevard into a 21st century thoroughfare. The plan will include strategic land use, transportation and design recommendations to facilitate this transformation. Cannon Boulevard (US 29) is a major transportation and commercial corridor which serves the City of Kannapolis, along with surrounding communities and the greater Cabarrus County/Rowan County area. WATER & SEWER

Royal Oaks Rehab Replace and rehabilitate existing water and sanitary sewer lines. Project delayed due to lack of funds. TBD TBD

WAYFINDING

 

1st Phase completed. It includes approximately 50 signs throughout the City which will provide direction to the City's major attractions & facilities.

2nd Phase Gateway monuments at the I-85 exits as part of the NCDOT widening project.
