Officially incorporated in 1984, the City of Kannapolis is a Council-Manager form of municipal government. Kannapolis is governed by a Mayor and a City Council, consisting of six members who are elected to four-year terms. Each November, Council elects one of its members to serve as Mayor Pro tem for one year. The Mayor and Mayor Pro tem have the same powers as the other members of Council and vote upon all issues. The Mayor serves as the spokesperson for the Council and is authorized to execute legal documents on behalf of the City.
The Kannapolis City Council meets regularly twice a month on the second and fourth Monday of each month. The first meeting is known as a Work Session meeting, beginning at 4:30 p.m. and is a less formal meeting which allows Council to discuss issues in greater detail. On the fourth Monday of each month the City Council meets at 6 p.m. and conducts City business. Here residents have an opportunity to speak on issues. City Council Meetings are held in the City Hall Council Chambers, 401 Laureate Way, 6:00 p.m. (unless otherwise noted on this calendar link). The public is welcome at both sessions.
