City Council

City Council

Officially incorporated in 1984, the City of Kannapolis is a Council-Manager form of municipal government. Kannapolis is governed by a Mayor and a City Council, consisting of six members who are elected to four-year terms. Each November, Council elects one of its members to serve as Mayor Pro tem for one year. The Mayor and Mayor Pro tem have the same powers as the other members of Council and vote upon all issues. The Mayor serves as the spokesperson for the Council and is authorized to execute legal documents on behalf of the City.

The Kannapolis City Council meets regularly twice a month on the second and fourth Monday of each month. The first meeting is known as a Work Session meeting, beginning at 4:30 p.m. and is a less formal meeting which allows Council to discuss issues in greater detail. No official action is taken in Work Session meetings. On the fourth Monday of each month the City Council meets at 6 p.m. and conducts City business. Here residents have an opportunity to speak on issues. City Council Meetings are held in the City Hall Council Chambers, 401 Laureate Way, 6:00 p.m. (unless otherwise noted on this calendar link).  The public is welcome at both sessions.

How to Speak at a City Council Meeting

On the fourth Monday of each month, City Council holds a  public comment session at the end of the agenda. During this time, members of the public may address Council on any matter which is directly related to City business. In order to have an accurate record in the minutes, you are asked to fill out a white card located on a table as you enter the Council Chambers. One it is filled out, return it to the City Clerk at the front of the room. Each person speaking shall be limited to three (3) minutes. The Mayor will call you to the podium at the appropriate time.

City Council Agendas/Minutes/Meeting Schedule:

Agendas are posted on the Wednesday before the Council Meetings and may be found here.

A search of the minutes of Council meetings and Agendas are posted after approved by City Council and can be found here.

If you have any questions or please contact City Clerk Bridgette Bell at 704-920-4303 or bbell@kannapolisnc.gov.

Serve on a Board or Commission

Applications to serve on the City’s boards and commissions are welcome throughout the year. Generally, applications are due April 1 for appointments starting with the July 1 fiscal year. However, seats occasionally become open throughout the year to be filled immediately. Members serving on City boards and commissions commit to serving a 3-year term with no more than three excused absences per year. Meetings are typically monthly in the evening, but details for each commission vary. Those interested in applying can click here for an application. For more information, contact the City Clerk at bbell@kannapolisnc.gov or 704-920-4303.
