The restoration of the Gem Theatre Marquee is in its final stages as the theatre prepares for the return of summer blockbusters in downtown Kannapolis.   The iconic Gem Theatre marquee was originally constructed in 1936. Its historic blue hues had faded, and the neon lighting was not operable in some areas. It was time for a facelift. Jerome Blakeney, Jr. has been named Director of General Services and Jenny Johnson has been selected as the Director of Customer Service.   Jerome has worked for the City of Kannapolis since 2007 when he began working in the Public Works Department. The City of Kannapolis officially opened the Irish Buffalo Creek Greenway yesterday with a ribbon cutting ceremony and members of the Kannapolis City Council and guests taking a walk along the City’s newest healthy amenity.   This first phase of the greenway is 2.7 miles and runs along a creek from Orphanage Road to Rogers Lake Road. The Kannapolis City Council recently approved an additional $264,857 in non-profit grants for six local organizations.  The funds are to be used for preparing, preventing and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds must be used to benefit the residents of Kannapolis.   Grants were awarded to:   Cabarrus Cooperative Christian Ministry (CCM) - $150,000 to assist clients with utilities and rental payments.
