The City recently received an update on the transportation projects that are planned or underway by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Due to the growth and condition of our state roadways there are several projects happening at once.

The City and NCDOT encourage everyone to be safe and follow speed limits in work zones. Additionally, please watch for timely updates on the City and NCDOT websites, Facebook and Twitter outlets.

I-85 Widening Project: This project extends from N.C. 152 (Exit 68) in Rowan County to N.C. 73 (Exit 55) in Cabarrus County. The project is tentatively scheduled to be completed in 2019.

N.C. 3 Widening Project: This project will widen N.C. 3 from two to four lanes from Kannapolis Parkway to Dale Earnhardt Boulevard. Clearing and utility relocation is now underway. Actual construction of the street should begin in Spring 2018.

N.C. 3 Widening Project – Phase II: This project would widen N.C. 3 from Dale Earnhardt Boulevard to U.S. 601. Environmental submittal of documents is underway. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024.

Cannon Boulevard and Dale Earnhardt Intersection Improvements: Right-of-way acquisition will begin in 2018 with construction scheduled to begin in 2020. Completion will be in 2021.

Lane Street Improvements: Lane Street from Exit 63 to Main Street, which would include traffic safety improvements, traffic signals, bicycle lanes and landscaping. Construction is scheduled to begin after I-85 widening is completed at the Lane Street exit.

Replacement of Centergrove Road Bridge: Right-of-way acquisition is underway now with construction scheduled to start in 2018.

Replacement of the East 1st Street Bridge: Right-of-way acquisition will begin in 2018 with construction scheduled to start in 2019.

Main Street Improvements: The project is from Kimball Road to North Loop Road. Improvements will include sidewalks and bike lanes. Right-of-way acquisition is scheduled for 2024 and construction in 2026.

Roxie Street Improvements: Improvements include new islands, restriping and signage. This project will be completed after the I-85 widening is finished at this exit.

Oakwood Sidewalk Installation: This sidewalk would run from Windsor to Shady Brook Elementary School. Right-of-way acquisition is being finalized and construction is scheduled for 2018.

Little Texas Road Sidewalk Phase I: This sidewalk will run from Forest Park Drive to the existing sidewalk in the Mission Hills subdivision. Right-of-way acquisition is underway and construction is scheduled for 2018.

Little Texas Road Sidewalk Phase II: This sidewalk will run from Dale Earnhardt Boulevard to Lane Street. Design begins in 2022 with construction slated for 2024.
