After nearly three decades of dedicated service to the community, the City of Kannapolis congratulates two longtime members of the Kannapolis Police Department on their retirements.
Sergeant Travis Furr is retiring after 28 years of service with the Kannapolis Police Department. He began his career in August 1998 as a patrol officer. After serving 10 years in patrol, he was promoted to Patrol Sergeant in February 2008. In July 2010, he transferred to the 911 Communications Division, where he served as Technical Services Sergeant for the last 16 years.
Sergeant Furr earned an Associate of Applied Science in Fish and Wildlife Management from Haywood Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources from Western Carolina University, and an Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
He has played a key role in ensuring the Kannapolis 911 Communications Center technology and staff remain at a high level of modernization and professionalism, and this included the move to the current City Hall. He has received numerous honors during his time with the department, including the Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate, the Roger Dale Carter Award, the Chief's Award, the Police Star, the Blueline Brotherhood Officer of the Year Award, and most recently, the Kannapolis Police Department Leadership Award.
In retirement, Sergeant Furr looks forward to spending more time with family and friends while beginning a second career. He and his wife, Aprille, have two children, Kennedy and Kolton. They are members of West A Tabernacle Baptist Church and reside in Rockwell.
Lieutenant Allen Tomlin Jr. is retiring after 28 and a half years of service with the Kannapolis Police Department. He began his law enforcement career with Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Department in 1997, moving to the Kannapolis Police Department in 1998. In 2000, he became a Field Training Officer and was promoted to Sergeant and Lieutenant. Throughout his career, he has also served as a negotiator on the department's Special Response Team.
A Cabarrus County native, Lieutenant Tomlin is a graduate of Concord High School. He studied Criminal Justice at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, earned the Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, and has completed more than 3,000 hours of professional training and education.
During his career, Lieutenant Tomlin received numerous awards and commendations. In 2021, he was honored with the Robert J. Eury Award, the highest law enforcement honor presented in Cabarrus County.
In retirement, Lieutenant Tomlin looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Joann, and continuing to grow his landscaping business.
