Kannapolis and the Charlotte Region is now under a Winter Storm Watch from 7 a.m., Saturday, January 24 to 1 p.m., Monday, January 26.
A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet, or ice accumulations that may impact travel. We encourage you to pay attention to official weather forecasts over the weekend as the winter weather arrives in our area.
Kannapolis Transportation employees are brining major thoroughfares and bridges in the city as we expect to have wind/sleet/freezing rain in our area.
You should prepare to not leave your home for a couple of days and for the potential loss of electricity.
Here are a few tips for things you should do to prep for the expected bad weather:
1. Make sure you have batteries for your flashlights and weather radio.
2. Keep your phone and devices charged.
3. If you lose electricity DO NOT CALL 911 - call Duke Energy at 1-800-POWERON or if you have Landis Power call – 704.857.2411.
4. Secure items from the wind and freezing rain that are outside your home.
5. Have a plan to heat your home and to cook food safely.
6. Use generators and grills outside only.
7. Make sure your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working.
8. Make sure you have all medications and your medical devices that are energy dependent can operate on batteries or other alternative power sources.
8. Make sure your pets will be safe from the weather.
9. Keep updated on the weather and City operations as the winter weather moves into our area.
