Department Overview

The Kannapolis Fire Department proudly protects over 63,000 residents living in an area of over 32 square miles. The Department consists of roughly 120 personnel.

The Kannapolis Fire Department operates out of five firehouses, which house five engine companies, two ladder companies, a heavy rescue, a hazardous materials unit, and various support vehicles.

Our firefighters work on a 1-3-2-3 schedule, which means they work twenty-four hours, then are off seventy two hours, then work forty-eight hours and then are off another seventy-two hours. There are three shifts: A, B, and C.

An ISO 1 rating, issued by the Insurance Services Office (ISO), represents the highest possible score a fire department can achieve in the Public Protection Classification (PPC) program. This rating reflects a fire department's overall effectiveness in preventing and fighting fires within its community. Here's what it entails:

Fire Suppression Capabilities: The fire department must demonstrate exceptional performance in responding to fire emergencies, including the availability of well-trained firefighters, adequate staffing levels, and access to modern firefighting equipment.

Emergency Communications: The community must have a highly efficient emergency communications system that quickly and effectively dispatches fire department resources.

Water Supply: The community must have a reliable water supply system with adequate water pressure and volume to support firefighting efforts, including well-maintained hydrants and water mains.

Fire Prevention and Public Safety: The fire department should have strong fire prevention programs, including building inspections, fire safety education, and code enforcement.

Training: Firefighters must receive continuous, comprehensive training that meets high standards, ensuring they are prepared to handle a wide range of emergency situations.

An ISO 1 rating can have several benefits for a community:

  • Lower Insurance Premiums: Property owners in communities with an ISO 1 rating may benefit from lower property insurance premiums because insurers recognize the reduced risk of fire-related losses.
  • Improved Public Safety: The high standards required for this rating typically mean better over protection and emergency response, enhancing public safety.
  • Community Confidence: An ISO 1 rating can boost community confidence in their fire department’s ability to protect lives and property.

Overall, achieving an ISO 1 rating is a mark of excellence and signifies that a fire department provides us protection services.
