Fire Captain Craig Miller is retiring after nearly three decades of service to the City of Kannapolis Fire Department.

Captain Miller began his career in 1997 as a member of the first group of professional firefighters hired by the City. He was one of 12 firefighters hired to serve the City’s three fire stations at that time. Prior to the hiring of this group of firefighters Kannapolis was served by volunteer firefighters.

Throughout his career, Captain Miller has witnessed significant growth within both the City and the Fire Department. When he began, the department operated just four engines from only three stations. Today, the department operates five engines and two ladder trucks across three rotating shifts and five stations.

During his career, Captain Miller earned numerous certifications and completed specialized training, including Firefighter I and II, technical rescue, confined space rescue, wild land firefighting and leadership training through UNC Charlotte.

Captain Miller commented, "I am proud of the progress the department has made during my career and believe the best is yet to come for both the Kannapolis Fire Department and the City.”

In retirement, Captain Miller plans to spend more time enjoying the lake and the outdoors with his family.
