Investigation Underway

KANNAPOLIS, N.C – At approximately 11:40 a.m. today Kannapolis Police received a 911 call regarding a report of a man firing a gun on S. Main Street near Bell Street.

As officers neared the scene, they witnessed the suspect holding a gun, attempting to carjack a vehicle at the intersection of S. Main Street and Bethpage Road. The suspect was shot by officers during the incident.

The suspect was taken to Atrium Cabarrus where he died from his injuries. No officers were injured.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol pending an internal review of the incident. The SBI has been called to assist with the investigation per standard procedures.

Traffic Alert – S. Main Street, from Dale Earnhardt Boulevard to Rankin Street, is closed at this time as the investigation continues.
