Run Kannapolis: Towel City Tavern 5K | Downton Kannapolis | 8 a.m., Saturday, May 16

Runners and walkers of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in the Towel City Tavern 5K on Saturday, May 16, in Downtown Kannapolis.

The race will begin at 8 a.m. and is part of the popular Run Kannapolis race series, which encourages community fitness and fun.

Greener Tomorrow and Kickoff to Summer Events | Village Park (700 West C Street) | 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Saturday, May 16 | Free

Come join us for double the fun on May 16th! Enjoy a morning at Village Park as we celebrate both our rescheduled Earth Day Event AND our Kickoff to Summer Field Day!

Both events will take place from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and are free to the public.

  • Greener Tomorrow Event: Enjoy activities that highlight nature, sustainability, and fun for the whole family at our Earth Day Celebration! Take part in painting river rocks, designing mini bird houses and a scavenger hunt!
  • Kickoff to Summer Event: There will be music, games, prizes, crafts, and much more at our Kickoff to Summer Field Day event! The Train and Carousel will be open, and rides will be just $1.50 per person, per ride.

Bring your friends and family out for a morning full of fun and learning- we can’t wait to see you there!

Stories Under the Stars: Story Ship | Afton Library | 7 p.m., Saturday, May 16 | Free

Dinosaurs are returning to Kannapolis for an unforgettable evening of music, storytelling, and adventure! Join us at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 16 at the Afton Library (6095 Glen Afton Blvd.).

Story Ship will present Diggery’s Dinosaur Adventure! This interactive performance invites families and children of all ages to join a magical journey through time filled with music, excitement, and prehistoric fun.

Guests will help Diggery and friends on a dinosaur-themed adventure featuring imaginative storytelling and engaging entertainment designed for audiences of all ages.

The event is free and open to the public.

Catch a Movie at the Gem Theatre | 111 Laureate Way

Stop by and see a film at the historic Gem Theatre. Now through May 20, the film The Sheep Detectives (PG) will be on the screen. Tickets may be purchased online at, www.gem-theatre.com/Tickets or at the theatre.

The Sheep Detectives (PG) May 7 – May 20 | Every night a shepherd reads aloud a murder mystery, pretending his sheep can understand. When he is found dead, the sheep realize at once that it was a murder and think they know everything about how to go about solving it.

While you are in Downtown, take advantage of the City of Kannapolis’ West Avenue Shuttles, Thunder and Lightning. The shuttles will run from 5 – 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The shuttles make a continuous loop between four designated stops: the NCRC public parking deck, the top of the horseshoe sidewalk, First Baptist Church, and the Swanee Theatre. A shuttle will arrive at each stop approximately every 5 minutes. The shuttles are both ADA accessible.
