The Chief Fire Officer designation is part of the CPSE's professional credentialing program, which acknowledges individuals who demonstrate excellence and outstanding achievement throughout their fire service career. The designation is a mark of distinction that signifies Summitt's dedication to continuous improvement, professional growth, and service to the community.

To earn the CFO designation, Summitt underwent a rigorous peer review process that evaluated his professional experience, education, association membership, community involvement, and technical competence. The comprehensive assessment included an extensive application detailing his career achievements and contributions to the profession.

Summitt has served with the Kannapolis Fire Department since 2008, steadily advancing through the ranks due to his exemplary service and leadership. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration from Fayetteville State University. Additionally, he is an instructor with NCOSFM, completed the North Carolina School of Government’s Municipal and County Administration (MCA) program, and is a graduate of UNCC’s Fire and Rescue Management Institute.

Assistant Chief Summitt resides in Rowan County with his wife and their 4-year-old son.

The Kannapolis Fire Department proudly protects over 60,000 residents living in an area of over 32 square miles. The Department consists of roughly 120 personnel and operates out of five firehouses, which house five engine companies, two ladder companies, a heavy rescue, a hazardous materials unit, and various support vehicles. The department maintains an ISO 1 rating, the highest possible classification from the Insurance Services Office, reflecting excellence in fire protection services.
