Kannapolis Fire, Police, and Parks & Recreation staff joined the American Red Cross in hosting Camp Ready Kids at New Hope Lutheran Church in Kannapolis this week. At the free two day camp there were approximately 50 campers, grades 1st thru 5th, who participated.

Camp Ready Kids is designed to use a variety of entertaining and educational activities to teach campers about safety guidelines, disaster and emergency preparedness. Campers participated in a range of activities including:
• Fire safety training, including a trip through the fire safety house and visits from Smokey Bear® and Sparky the Fire Dog®
• Environmental safety lessons teaching ways to “Reduce, Reuse & Recycle” and “Go Green” at home
• Health and Wellness training from Parks & Recreation staff
• Age-appropriate lessons on gun safety, bullying, internet security, and/or drug abuse prevention taught by representatives of the police and sheriff departments
• Forest safety through the Hug a Tree program
• Basic first aid lessons
• Water safety training through the American Red Cross Whale Tales program
• Disaster/Emergency Preparedness training including understanding weather alerts and conducting a weather experiment
• Games, prizes, and recreation time
Campers received a beginner Disaster Preparedness Kit through the new Pillowcase Project sponsored by The Walt Disney Company. These kits included items such as a first aid kit, flashlight, whistle, and lots of helpful information.
