State officials are asking us to stay off the roadways tonight. Many roads may be flooded, have downed trees and other hazards you may not be able to see in the dark until too late. Please be safe.

Be aware that we have closed a few streets due to flooding and downed trees. They are: Trinity Church near Kannapolis Parkway; Dogwood Boulevard at the creek; Chipola; Fairview@East First St. We expect these to remain closed throughout the night.

Garbage/recycling routes will operate on a one day delay this week. (Friday's route will be collected on Saturday.)                        

The City of Kannapolis is closely monitoring Hurricane Florence. We encourage you to follow news outlets for the latest information the path of the hurricane. As the storm approaches the City will disseminate information on this website page, Facebook (City of Kannapolis & Kannapolis 911 pages), Twitter, Instagram, NextDoor, LinkedIn, Email Newsletters and Blackboard Connect-Reverse 911 (if necessary) and thru traditional media/news outlets.

As of now the City is operating on a regular schedule. Garbage/Recycling routes are being collected on a regular schedule.

Power Outage Safety

I have no electricity. Who should I call?
•Duke Energy Customers should call: 1-800.POWERON (1-800.769.3766) or visit www.duke-energy.com/outages
•Landis Power Customers should call: 704-857-2411

Can I use my grill inside while the power is out?
Never use a charcoal or gas grill inside, as doing so can cause carbon monoxide poisoning and can be a fire hazard.

Where should I set up my generator?
Generators should only be used in well-ventilated outdoor areas, to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Do not run generators inside garages.

The power is out, should I unplug appliances/electronics?
Yes, so they are not damaged by a power surge when power is restored. Consider leaving one light turned on so you’ll know when the power is back on.

Candles

Are candles safe?
Not really, try to use flashlights, especially if you have children or pets, to reduce the risk of fires.

Food

The power is out, what should I do about the food in my fridge/freezer?
Group foods together and keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed to help food stay safe longer. After power returns, throw away perishable items (meat, dairy, eggs, leftovers) if the refrigerator has been above 40 °F for more than four hours. If you have any doubt about the safety of food, throw it out.

Are there any shelters open in Kannapolis?
Not at this time, if the need arises shelters will be opened by the Counties.

A hurricane WATCH has been issued – what does that mean?
Hurricane conditions, including winds over 74 mph and heavy rain, are possible within 48 hours.

A hurricane WARNING has been issued -what does that mean?
Hurricane conditions, including winds over 74 mph and heavy rain, are expected within 36 hours.

A tropical storm WATCH has been issued -what does that mean?
Tropical storm conditions, including winds from 39 to 73 mph and heavy rain are expected within 48 hours.

A tropical storm WARNING has been issued – what does that mean?
Tropical storm conditions, including winds from 39 to 73 mph and heavy rain are expected within 36 hours.

Medicine/Medical Supplies

I need medicine/medical supplies – can you get them for me or take me to a pharmacy during the hurricane?
Call 704-920-4000. We may be able to assist if there is a physical/medical reason. If your equipment is power dependent call 911.

Water Service

If the power goes out, will I lose water?
The Water Treatment Plant has a generator, so if you are a City customer, you should still have water without power.

If I evacuate, should I turn off my water?
Yes, shutting off water to individual houses, may provide some level of protection if plumbing pipes are damaged during the storm.

My water line has broken, what should I do?
Call 704-920-4200.

Will I be able to flush my toilet?
Yes, if you are a City customer, you should be able to flush your toilet.

Garbage/Recycling

Garbage/Recycling routes are on a normal schedule. 

Storm Debris/Trees

Please help us keep storm drains free of debris and do not block them with vehicles, garbage/recycling carts, etc. Remove your garbage/recycling carts from the street and secure them on your property so they do not blow away.

What do I do with my storm debris – and when?
Storm debris should be put at curbside after the storm has passed. You should try to separate debris by categories include vegetative debris, construction & demolition debris, electronics, household trash, appliances & metal, household hazardous waste, etc. The City offers unlimited amounts of the tree debris at the curb after a disaster. Pickup may be delayed due to the number of trees down. The City cannot tell you the day or time it will be collected.

A tree has fallen into my house, what do I do?
If anyone is injured or trapped, call 911
If no one is injured or trapped, call 704.920.4000

I have a tree/limb down at my house. Will you cut the tree up for me?
No, the City cannot cut up trees on private property. If the tree is blocking your driveway and there is an emergency that requires you to leave, call 704-920-4200.

There is a tree down on the road in front of my house, will you help?
Call 911.

My basement is flooding, what should I do?
Do not enter your basement and call 911.

My road is flooded, and cars are being stranded, what should I do?
Call 911.
