Three Kannapolis Fire Department (KFD) personnel have been promoted to new positions. “I am pleased to have highly qualified individuals such as these personnel who continue to further their leadership within Kannapolis Fire Department,” said Chief Ernie Hiers. “It will be a privilege to work with them in their new areas.”

Senior Captain Greg Summitt is promoted to Training Manager, under the direction of Technical Services Division Chief Kirk Beard, and will coordinate the department’s training program. Summitt started as a junior volunteer when he was 16-years-old and has 16 years of fire service; nine of which are full-time service with the Kannapolis Fire Department. He currently serves as a Deputy Chief of Cleveland Community Fire Department. He is a past recipient of both the KFD Firefighter and Officer of the Year awards.

Senior Engineer Cody McSwain is promoted to Captain on Engine 41 – A shift. McSwain began his fire service career in 2005 and has 12 years of fire service experience; nine of those with Kannapolis Fire Department. He is the recipient of the 2011 KFD Firefighter of the Year award.

Senior Firefighter Caleb Barnhardt is promoted to Engineer on Ladder 14 – A shift. As a teenager, Barnhardt joined as an original member of the KFD Explorer Post 001 and currently serves as an Explorer Advisor. He has seven years of fire service experience, most of which is with the Kannapolis Fire Department, and he volunteers/works part-time with Rockwell City Fire Department.

“I am confident in the ability of those promoted to these roles in that they will continue to advance the core values of the department. I look forward to their continued growth here at KFD,” stated Chief Hiers.
