City Planning Department Completes Transition
Kannapolis, N.C. – The City of Kannapolis will complete the transition of its Planning Department from an outside consultant firm to an in-house municipal department. The City made the decision after determining the City could improve efficiencies, continuity of services and in order to meet the increasing demands of the growing municipality.
The Planning Department will be responsible for the review of all residential and nonresidential development activity in the city; provide staff support to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Adjustment and other city departments. In addition, the Planning Department will enforce the City’s Unified Development Ordinance and oversee the minimum housing ordinances, junk vehicles, community appearance standards and other code enforcement ordinances.
The City’s Planning Department is led by Zachary (Zac) Gordon. He is joined by Senior Planner Kassie Watts; Planning Technician Aaron Tucker and Code Enforcement officers Tony Cline and Barry Hower.

Gordon joined the City in October in order to ensure the transition would be seamless. Previously, Gordon had served as the principal planner for the Town of Huntersville, where he was been responsible for the Town’s long range planning efforts and oversight of its growth management ordinances.

Gordon has 26 years of planning experience. He has a bachelor of geography and political science degree from State University of New York and a master of city and regional planning degree from Cornell University. He has also served as the Planning Director for the Town of Exeter, N.H. and senior planner for the City of East Providence, R.I.

He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, the American Planning Association – NC Chapter and the Urban Land Institute.
