The Kannapolis Fire Department recently competed in a statewide Haz Mat Challenge as part of the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo. This was the first year Kannapolis has participated in the event. Team members included Captain Tim Smith and Firefighters Doug Carter, Luke Osborne and Clay Sellers.

“This competition gives us the opportunity to test our knowledge, our training and helps us identify any additional training skills we may need in order to be prepared for this type of emergency in our community,” said Kirk Beard, Division Fire Chief of Technical Services. “We look forward to continuing to perfect our skills at future competitions.”

This annual competition pits fire department teams from across the state against each other to test their skills in hazardous material situations. This year, 12 teams competed in challenges, ranging from a written exercise to hands on scenarios, while dressed in full protective gear, for spill containment, hazardous exposures, and flammable environments.
