Kannapolis City Manager Mike Legg presented the proposed Fiscal Year 2019 budget to the Kannapolis City Council Tuesday evening. The proposed FY 2019 budget is $69,264,364 which includes all seven operating funds of the City. The budget includes no property tax increase. If approved, the current tax rate will remain at .63 cents per $100 valuation - a home valued at $150,000 will pay $945 annually in property taxes for all City services. Construction on two Kannapolis Fire Department stations is now underway following a groundbreaking ceremony held today, May 22. Fire Station #2 and #3 have exceeded their lifespan and the decision to build new facilities was made after studies showed the stations would cost more to renovate than to replace. All City of Kannapolis offices will be closed on Monday, May 28 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, May 29 at 8 a.m. There will be no disruption in garbage and recycling collection service, however, there will be no yard debris collection. All Kannapolis parks will be open for regular operating hours from dawn until dusk. On Saturday, May 5, children raced zucchinis in the Kids Zone at the Jiggy with the Piggy Festival. Competitors worked diligently and used their imaginations to create the fastest and most nutritious cars with the supplies of vegetables provided to them. The City’s newest water tank is under construction off N.C. 3 near Odell School Road. The tank will hold 500,000 gallons of water and is 143 feet tall.The water tank will increase water pressure to homes, businesses and fire hydrants for the entire area west of Lake Howell, Jim Johnson Road and east of the Mecklenburg/Cabarrus County border up to N.C. 3.This area is the fastest growing segment of the City. During the Jiggy with the Piggy Festival, May 4-5, 2018, the teams participating in the Kansas City Barbeque Society competition also competed in a dessert contest. Kansas City Barbeque judges spent Saturday very carefully judging 70 teams from six states who competed in the categories of chicken, ribs, pork and brisket at the Jiggy with the Piggy Festival in Kannapolis. 100 judges also from six states chose the winners based on taste, appearance and tenderness. During the Jiggy with the Piggy Festival, May 4-5, 2018, hundreds of people participated in the People’s Choice Wing Contest and the People’s Choice Pork Contest.
