Kannapolis Fire Department Participates in Statewide Smoke Alarm Event > City of Kannapolis | City of Kannapolis

Did you know your sense of smell diminishes while you sleep? It’s true! Studies have shown that while scent can disturb you when you are awake and even into the early transition into sleep, smells will not awaken you even if it means danger. This is why it is important to have a working smoke alarm.

The Kannapolis Fire Department was one of 90 departments across North Carolina participating in an event Saturday to check and install smoke alarms in homes around the City.

We were also one of 30 fire departments to receive a grant for 60 Kidde Long-life Smoke Alarms. These smoke alarms need no battery replacement. When installed and used according to manufacturer’s instructions, these alarms last approximately 7-10 years.

Because you cannot smell very well at night and most fires occur in the evening hours, Kannapolis Fire urges all residents to have one smoke alarm in all sleeping areas, one outside each sleeping area, and one on every level of the home.

Other agencies joining Kannapolis Fire for the event were local partners: American Red Cross and ServPro of Northern Cabarrus County & China Gove, Kannapolis Fire Explorer Post, and many community volunteers. The event was organized by the N.C. Office of State Fire Marshal/N.C. Department of Insurance.

The Kannapolis event was conducted in the western part of the city and the city will do more smoke alarm events in the future.

If your neighborhood would like free smoke alarm inspections, installations or home safety visits call (704) 920-4260 to schedule an appointment or complete the Educational Program request form at kannapolisnc.gov/Fire.
